La historia de Youth Brigade es la historia de los hermanos Stern y su mítico sello punk BYO (Better Youth Organization).
Toda empieza a finales de los 70, cuando la familia Stern se tiene que mudar desde Canadá a California por cuestiones laborales. De esta forma los tres hermanos Stern se ven de pronto inmersos en los inicios del movimiento punk californiano, formando parte de los primeros años de la escena.
Después de graduarse en el instituto, Shawn Stern (guitarra y voz), Mark Stern (bajo) y Adam
Stern (batería) deciden formar Youth Brigade en 1980 en plena explosión de la música punk.
La filosofía de la banda es que “la juventud”, no solo es la edad, si no una actitud y que cada generación debía luchar por mejorar los problemas de la sociedad de su tiempo. Es con estos ideales con los que se forma la banda y bajo los que Shawn y Mark Stern fundaron el sello
punk “Better Youth Organization” en 1982, donde auto editarían todos sus discos y donde
también grabarían otros grupos míticos del movimiento.
